Marla Ruzicka

????app????Marla Ruzicka was killed in Iraq in April 2005, while helping identify and aid civilian casualties and victims of war. At great risk to herself, Marla sought out innocent civilians injured in war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan; recorded their suffering and then enlisted their families, the U.S. military, congress, journalists and government officials to provide millions of dollars in aid to them. She created an unheard of precedent where the militaries of opposing nations took responsibility for the harm they brought upon blameless victims of war.

Her work continues with , the organization she founded. CIVIC seeks to mitigate the impact of war and its aftermath by ensuring that timely and effective assistance is provided to unintended victims of conflict. Their goal is to see that such assistance be a permanent part of the U.S. and other governments’ approach to armed conflict.

????app????Marla’s parents, Clifford and Nancy Ruzicka, of Northern California will receive the Hero of Forgiveness, Reconciliation and Peace Award posthumously for their daughter.
